The traditional leader urged management to ensure that support to the community and the chiefdom continued.
“If the mine is operating well it is our happiness but if it is not we need to work together and ensure that the operations are smooth. We want to see our people benefiting from our pride that is our minerals,” he said.
Joseph Mwilwa ward councillor, Mr. Able Bwalya who was in the company of the Chief informed management that the community was happy with the new Investor and hoped to see the continuation of social investment in the host area.
Mr. Bwalya pleaded with new management to encourage the contractors engaged to consider the local community for non-skilled labour needs.
MCML Deputy CEO, Mr. Daniel Chihili highlighted the Investor’s vision and the challenges that the new owners found at BCL.

Mr. Chihili said JCHX had demonstrated to be a serious investor as witnessed by its vision to revamp the mine highlighting the projects that were being implemented that include the improvement of the ventilation, construction of a new pump station underground, a back-filling plant and sinking of the new shaft.
“We are privileged to be associated with JCHX, they have invested a lot in research and development. In the short period they have been here, there is a lot of goodwill that has happened. They have changed the narrative of BCL, the mine was at the verge of collapsing but it has been resuscitated.
In the five months that JCHX has taken over, we have seen a change in investment, they have shown their intention and they have started walking their talk,” he said.
And Deputy CEO, Mr. Huang Zhaoyu said the focus was to make the Mine profitable and thereafter the benefits would start trickling down to the community.

Out of the 82 employees one clocked 15 years’ service.
The award ceremony held in Selebi-Phikwe was attended by employees’ spouses, unions representative, and management team.
Bamangwato Concessions Limited Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Daniel Chihili who graced the occasion appreciated the employee’s dedication and commitment to the company stating that it was not easy to work for 10 years in the mining sector because of the challenges.
Mr. Chihili said working for 10 and 15 years in the mine required commitment, discipline, dedication and attention to detail.

“The people that we are recognising today have worked a total of 825 years. Achieving this milestone, yes, it is the time of celebrations but I want to challenge you to take time to introspect on how your 10 years’ service has been and the way forward,” he said.
Mr. Chihili encouraged employees to stay focused and support the vision of JCHX so that the investment the investor intends to make in BCL could be realised.
He said to sustain operations of the mine, employees needed to produce safely, meet the target and reduce costs by avoiding wastage.

“BCL is not an easy project, but we are privileged to have the third shareholder to come on board after the two previous owners gave up. We all have a responsibility to work hand in hand and work hard to sustain the operations of BCL.
Let us have the attitude of safeguarding equipment, materials and everything that is at our disposal at places of work so that we minimise wastage and cost in order for the company to be profitable,” he said.
He further challenged the employees to reflect on their 10 and 15 years of service at BCL and ensure that they lived within their means to avoid poor performance at work.
He urged them to continue contributing to the wellbeing of BCL and help achieve the targets that had been set.
“I encourage you to live within your means, look at your capacity and where you are. A lot of people get challenged by people who are not in their category, if your neighbour is doing well and it does not suit your income, live your life. A lot of us are finding ourselves in a lot of problems because we want to be like our friends and our neighbours and that is leading us to overborrowing. Indulging yourselves in a lot of debts will deprive your peace and your performance at work will be affected,” he challenged them.
Unions representative Ms. Kopa Mwape said the ceremony indicated the commitment and loyalty employees had towards BCL and applauded them for the determination and effort they had demonstrated for the past 10 years.
Ms.Mwape said the awards were a motivation to employees and appreciated management for continuing to honour its employees.
And recipients representative Mashako Mulolo was thankful to management for the awards and urged employees to continue working hard and be more productive.

ZEMA Approves Relocation of BCL’s Effluent Compliance Point to Engineered Artificial Wetland

Bamangwato Concessions Limited (MCML) has received the green light from the Botswana Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) to take an exciting step to relocate its current licensed effluent compliance point (No.004 ZEMA Compliance Point) to the newly constructed Artificial Wetland (Compliance point No. 007 ).
This marked a significant milestone in BCL’s commitment to sustainable and innovative environmental practices.
This authorization followed a thorough inspection of both sites by ZEMA where they were impressed with what they found.
ZEMA gave the mine an official go-ahead to shift the effluent compliance point, marking a positive step forward in the Company’s environmental stewardship.
MCML Safety, Health, Environment and Training Manager Mr. Gideon Sinkamba said the mine discharges a minimum of eight million cubic meters of waste water into the aquatic environment per annum and most of the effluent was dewatered water from its underground operations.

                                                   Newly constructed artificial wetland

In an interview, Mr Sinkamba explained that the Company previously had a challenge of discharging waste water to the aquatic environment with turbidity levels consistently above the statutory limit of ≤ 15 nephelometer turbidity units since 2018.
He said in 2022, MCML through the environmental section embarked on exploring the sustainability of wetlands as a potential polisher for waste water discharged to the natural environment from its mining operations through construction of an artificial wetland.

Mr. Sinkamba said the project focused on turbidity control with consequent beneficial impacts which included enhanced natural biodiversity conservation, compliance to effluent waste water legal requirements and replenishment of natural water bodies with “healthy” water.
He added that the construction of the artificial wetlands was an important undertaking as it would help reduce the impact of flooding.
“Wetlands are amongst the earth’s top carbon stores. By conserving and restoring high carbon wetlands the mine can reduce carbon emissions and increase the capacity to adapt to climate change, while improving biodiversity, water security and human well-being,” he said.
He said in April this year 2024 the company wrote to ZEMA requesting them to authorise the relocation of the currently licenced effluent compliance point (No.004) to the artificial wetland, which was subsequently granted.

Bamangwato Concessions Limited General Manager Operation Mr. Brett Hartmann addressing employees during Ukusungana mass safety meeting.

“I want to see 2024 with no injuries. I know we can do this if we all focus on our own individual safety, follow the rules and do not accept anything that is unsafe. We have demonstrated we can do this, we had three months last year August, September and December where we went the entire month without injuring anyone. So, I am confident that if we all focus on following the rules, looking after ourselves and others we can achieve this,” he said.
Mr. Hartmann said in 2024, the company will continue to improve safety awareness through training and education, refreshing and implementing the Golden Rules which targeting high risk or high potential risk tasks.
All the golden rules that will be implemented are about saving people’s lives so any breaches will be treated as a serious safety breach which will attract serious sanctions from management.

“Fortunately, the mine is in a better place this year, we are on top of managing flooding, we are pushing the declines down and as a result we will have more production areas that will allow us to increase production.
It’s not going to be easy but I honestly believe if we are all focused and all work together, we can achieve the required production,” he said.

“BCL had earlier in 2016 constructed the main clinic to serve the community, and as we continued interacting with the residents of Konkola township, we agreed to the request to construct and equip the maternity ward which will serve the people of Konkola, Chimfunshi and the surrounding communities,” Mr. Duffy said.

Copperbelt Health Director Dr. Charles Mwinuna expressed happiness for the newly constructed and equipped facility saying it will help reduce child mortality rate and mitigate maternal deaths.

Is it estimated that only 76 percent of births occur at a medical clinic, and alternative locations such as home births elevate the risk of mortality.

Whilst we won’t police you, we are putting our entire trust in your ability to work hard and produce to support yourselves and your families. BCL Implements New Technology: AI - Aerial Drone-based Surveying

BCL Mine Ltd has become the first Botswanan mine to adopt and implement Aerial drone-based surveying technology to improve data quality, data collection speed and overall efficiency in the Mine Technical Services.
Mine Survey Section has implemented technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to scan both underground and surface areas for mapping purposes.
The hardware and technology suit the underground and surface environments at BCL Mine because it’s easier, safer, higher resolution and faster to deploy. The speed at which the scans are captured and processed reduces risks for the survey team, reduces production delay when capturing the data and improves the response time for Mine Planning.
The DJI M300 RTK drone is an Enterprise next-level drone. The platform offers enhanced flight performance and unrivalled safety features such as collision avoidance, it’s able to “see,” “sense,” “move”, and “transform.” It is equipped with many sensors that increase functionalities when directed.

On Friday, 7th July, 2023, Dwyka Mining Services, a South African based company trained 13 BCL Surveyors in safe mapping operations using the Pilot Assist Module for underground and surface, flight log booking, smart battery management, site risk assessment guidelines and data extraction and processing.
